Male teachers advised to desist from setting “traps” for female students

Male teachers of the Ghana Education Service have been advised in their own interest to desist from setting traps for female students. They do this by inviting them to their homes only to use thme as maids.

In the end, some of them take advantage of the girls and have carnal knowledge of them which is against the code of conduct of the GES. According to the GES, female pupils are not maidservants.

Male teachers who invite female students to their homes must put an immediate stop to the practice. This warning comes days after several male teachers were either sacked from the service, had their ranks reduced and their names and schools they teach in were circulated on social media and on news portals.

Madam Nutsugah Mikado the Director of Girls Education Unit of (GES)rgued that some male teachers ask the girls to visit them to run errands for them, as  well as Male teachers advised to desist setting “traps” for female studentscook and wash for them. This practice does not make the girls safe as anything can happen to the detriment of the girl child and her education.

She advised the teachers at Kulkpeni in the Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region at a ceremony to award beneficiaries of the food and cash incentive program which currently has 17,000 girls registered from communities that are deprived in the northern region of Ghana.

Teacher emotional intelligence crucial in the school environment

The reality is that, this will not be the end of this canker. Stakeholders of education have called for stiffer punishments for such teachers instead of just demoting them or sacking them from the service as that will serve as a deterrent to like minded persons within the service.

It is time for today’s male teachers to rise up and save the name of the male teacher which is contently drug in the mud for such inhuman behaviours making it more and more difficult for teachers to gain back their respect and glory as role models and persons respected in society.

This is an urgent call to all male teachers and other staff in the education sector to rise up, and champion the campaign against this behaviour.

In some quarters, some have argued that, this behaviour is acquired in the training college but there is the need to conduct a research into this to ascertain the truth and what needs to be done to change this trend.
